Stockholm, April 18, 2016
The Embassy of Ecuador in Sweden informs that the National Government has taken the appropriate actions to deal with the emergency situation provoked by the earthquake measured 7.8 on the Richter Scale. The earthquake took place on Saturday 16th of April at 18.58 with its epicentre in Esmeraldas, 15 km from Muisne.
According to the Official Report from Instituto Geofísico de la Escuela Politécnica Nacional (IGPEN) 55 aftershocks have followed in the hours after the earthquake. These were measured between 2.6 and 6 on the Richter scale, making it the largest earthquake in Ecuador’s history since 1979.
Preliminary figures from yesterday at 19.00 (Ecuadorian time) indicate that 271 people are known to have died; 2527 are injured; 95 are sheltered; 370 buildings are destroyed, 151 buildings and 37 schools are damaged. The most affected areas are Pedernales and Portoviejo, in the province of Manabí.
A State of Emergency has been declared to preserve the order in the country and 6 provinces have been declared as emergency zones: Esmeraldas, Manabí, Santa Elena, Guayas, Santo Domingo and Los Ríos. This measure will allow the allocation of financial resources, mobilization of state forces and centralization of information, in order to support the victims and help the citizens as efficiently as possible these provinces.
The emergency response agencies are now operating. In Esmeralda, Los Rios and Portoviejo, among other provinces, shelters have been installed as well as operational services responding to emergency relief actions. The armed forces, fire brigade and members of the national police have been mobilized to the affected areas. Moreover, the Ministry of Transport, Public Work and the Ministry of Health has also mobilized resources to these areas as well. A field hospital is on its way to Pedernales.
